Although the two parties have been in America for generations, I attribute the current threat to the 2000 general presidential election because the two parties have become truly separate. Up to that point, the two parties had enough overlapping multitudes within them to allow for the kind of negotiating and coalition-building that naturally occurs in multiparty democracies. No more.
